Stephen Gannon, Living Inside Out, Publishing Editor
My name is Stephen Gannon, and I first met my then teenage friend, Jerry Haynes, at Camp Elim, a Christian youth camp in Woodland Park Colorado. I was a troubled kid, the product of a broken home. That same year, 1968, I received Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Savior. Little did I know the plans God had for my life. In 40 years, God took a troubled kid from the steps of Juvenile Hall and placed him as a successful writer, editor, and businessman, then Pastor, a Christian Camp Director, and on to the Southern California Regional Manager for EMF Broadcasting, 11 stations for K-LOVE and Air1 Radio. During that entire time, now Dr. Gerald (Jerry) Haynes and I have been close friends.
As publishing Editor of Jerry’s book, “Living Inside Out”, I can unequivocally share it is a very good and anointed book. It is a book that uniquely captures the interrelationship between our hearts and our actions as we endeavor to please God and helps us to realize our flesh and sometimes our will can trip us up.
But it’s not a book that beats down an already broken soul, but rather a very intuitive strategy that shows the systematic method God planned for lifting us up, walking the narrow path, while avoiding the pitfalls of the broad road that leads to destruction. “Living Inside Out” shows how God uses His Spirit at work through internal soulful actions and external deeds to transform us in the renewing of our minds. “Living Inside Out” should prove to be a Christian guidebook sharing a ready shelf with other books like the Purpose Driven Life, Streams in the Desert, and the Bible itself.
There are a few more things I would like to say about Jerry. He is one of the most genuine Evangelical Christians I have known in my life, and I have met many many Christian leaders. Jerry is positive. Jerry is kind. Jerry is encouraging. Jerry is brilliant beyond words. And, . . . Jerry believes God. Jerry trusts God. Jerry models Christ. He is fun. He loves life. He will try almost any adventure. Jerry is the iron that we all want to sharpen us. One of the things I treasure most about God is, he gave me Jerry as a lifelong friend.

I’ve known Jerry as a spiritual father for nearly 50 years now. “For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers.” 1 Cor. 4:15 (ESV) I commend Living Inside Out to you and your spiritual offspring as from a father, not just a guide. Jesus said you will know them by their fruits. To know the author is to enter a family full of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. May the transparency of this read bring the same righteousness, peace and joy to you and yours…

Dr. Jerry Haynes lays out a beautifully simple and symmetrical structure and fills it with his rich knowledge of the Bible, church history and Jewish traditions, weaving the themes of inter-related Christian qualities and disciplines. His work is academic in scope and depth, yet very readable and accessible to all. Here is a balanced perspective to help us navigate challenging times.

Dr. Haynes tells us that spirituality begins in the heart. And like a fine tapestry, he weaves key qualities for believers with four main disciplines using Scripture and ample examples from the early church to the present. I loved the stories from church history and the footnotes. A fine addition to any Christian’s library.
